Dock River

Harwich Angling Club held their first Pike match of 2018 on the Dock River. This sprint event fished from 9.30 to 12.30 meant the anglers had to work hard to catch and get home for Sunday lunch! The river was at bank full level, lightly coloured and flowing slowly. This suited the dead baiting method favoured by most competitors allowing the bait to be drifted steadily along the reed margins. The first fish however was caught by D. Wrigley using a lure worked slowly enough to hook a 3lb 14oz Pike.

Duncan Wrigley 3lb14oz Pike

The next catch came as H. Griffiths had a run on his dead bait and after watching his float slide away he struck into the second Pike of the day. It was another jack of 3lb 12oz and proved to be enough to gain second place in the match.

Harold Griffiths 3lb12oz Pike

The next fish fell to a floating plug Wrigley used to tempt the largest fish of the day at 5lb exactly. As he released this fish Wrigley saw his dead bait float bobbing about and couldn’t believe his luck as he reeled in another Pike of 3lb 4oz. The combined weight of 12lb 2oz gave Wrigley a clear win. All fish were released and will hopefully get bigger for the next time they’re caught.
